Aesthetic Botox in a Nutshell

Botox is often the best solution for preventing, reducing, and correcting wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. The treatment’s effectiveness is based on botulinum toxin’s ability to relax muscles. As the muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle or pull facial features downward relax, the signs of aging caused by muscle activity also diminish. The results of Botox treatment last 3–6 months. If you wish to maintain the results, the treatment can be repeated, for example, two or three times a year.

The "Sibelius wrinkle" is one of the most common reasons for treatment. After the Botox treatment performed by Ville, the client couldn't furrow her brows no matter how hard she tried.

Botox experiences

I’ve been seeing Ville since December 2022. I go to him for Botox once a year. And the results have lasted exceptionally well. Before getting Botox, my forehead and frown lines had already become very deep, and my forehead/expressions/gestures have always been very pronounced, which of course causes the forehead lines to deepen much more. Luckily, I decided to go to Ville in 2022 to prevent the lines and their deepening early on. The treatment itself doesn’t hurt at all, takes just a few minutes, and I can say without a doubt that Botox is the best thing I’ve ever done for my face. Ville is a true professional in his field! You can 100% trust yourself in his hands. If you’re looking for a Botox specialist in the Helsinki metropolitan area—go to Ville without hesitation!

Botox treatments are suitable for adults

Cosmetic botulinum toxin treatments are suitable for women and men over the age of 18.

  • Young adults may benefit, for example, from treatments that help control oily skin microbotoxtreatment.
  • People aged 20–25 may want to consider preventive measures against age-related changes Botox Botox treatment.
  • Wrinkles andfine lines in adult women and men can be elegantly smoothed away with a classic Botox treatment. Sometimes the best results are achieved with a Nefertiti lift or a Botox facelift.
  • Botox can also be used for subtle lip contouring: a Botox lip flip creates a slight, feminine pout on the upper lip, while a gummy smile treatment can help conceal excessively visible gums.
  • Botox treatments are also performed on men. An estimated 5–10 percent of Botox clients are so-called " Brotox" clients(Bro-tox: Botox treatments for men).
  • Botulinum toxin treatments are not performed on pregnant or breastfeeding women. Certain neuromuscular disorders may also constitute a contraindication.

“There’s practically no upper age limit. People of all ages come to my practice. The oldest among them are over 80, says Ville Männistö.

How does a Botox treatment work?

A botulinum toxin treatment begins with a thorough consultation and treatment planning. The injection itself takes only a few minutes. The treatment is well tolerated and virtually painless. Any discomfort is comparable to an insect bite.

Consultation

Botox treatment always begins with a thorough consultation. You can book a free, no-obligation consultation even before you’re sure you want to proceed with the treatment. The consultation provides time and space for those considering treatment. During the consultation, you can ask questions, share your wishes, and meet our professionals. We will also ensure during the consultation that there are no contraindications for botulinum toxin treatment (pregnancy, breastfeeding, neuromuscular disorders).

A separate consultation visit is not required. All Botox patients are consulted with before the procedure in any case, and if it is determined during the appointment that the procedure will not be performed, the Botox appointment automatically becomes a free consultation.

Before your very first Botox treatment, a separate consultation may be your best option. If you’ve had Botox treatments before, you can simply book an appointment for the treatment itself.

Injection

After the initial consultation, it’s time to proceed with the procedure. The skin in the treatment area is cleaned, and then the doctor, surgeon nurse marks the treatment area on the skin.

Botox is injected into the target muscles—or, in the case of Microbotox treatment, into the skin—using an extremely fine needle. The procedure takes an average of 5–15 minutes.

After Botox injections

After the Botox treatment, the marks drawn on the skin are wiped away. Arnica ointment can be applied to the skin to help prevent redness and bruising.

Local swelling at the injection sites often appears as small bumps. These subside immediately, usually within the first hour. Redness of the skin may occur, and in rare cases, a bruise may form at the injection site.

After Botox, the client can return to their daily routine. However, saunas and strenuous physical activity should be avoided for the first couple of days. You should remain upright for 4–6 hours. Others will not be able to tell that you’ve had the treatment. Botox is a true lunchtime treatment.

All aftercare instructions are reviewed verbally during the appointment. The client also receives written aftercare instructions.

The result won't appear immediately

Botox begins to work immediately after the procedure, but the results appear gradually over time. The first results are usually visible and noticeable after about four days, and the full effect is reached 2–4 weeks after treatment.

Muscles begin to respond to botulinum toxin at different rates. For this reason, the treated area may look slightly different each day during the first couple of weeks. Minor asymmetries are also possible at first.

During the first couple of weeks, the treated area often feels tight and heavy. Patience is key: results will be visible and assessable no sooner than two weeks after the procedure.

Botox lasts 3–6 months

The effects of Botox are always temporary. Generally, the results last anywhere from three months to six months. The effects fade in the same way they appear: gradually and incrementally, and not necessarily at exactly the same rate across all treated areas.

The dosage is directly proportional to the duration of the treatment results. The results of botulinum toxin treatment administered at the maximum dose last longer than those achieved with a moderate dosage. On the other hand, the maximum dose may feel and look a bit heavy during the first few weeks, especially on the forehead. Very carefully administered Botox produces extremely natural but also quite short-lived results.

“It’s important that you tell me what results you’re hoping for. The results of Botox treatment can be tailored to a great extent by adjusting the dosage.” (Surgeon Ville Männistö)

The results of Botox are always temporary

When administered by an experienced professional, botulinum toxin is a safe medication. You can also try botulinum toxin treatment with peace of mind, as the effects of the medication are always temporary. If the treatment is not repeated, the treated area will return to its natural state within a few months. If you are satisfied with the results and wish to maintain them, the procedure can be repeated, for example, two or three times a year.

Botox cannot produce permanent results. Of course, it is possible that with regular Botox treatments, the muscles will get used to being relaxed. When you haven’t been able to furrow your brow for years due to regular botulinum toxin treatments, the tendency to furrow your brow may fade to the point where you no longer remember to do so even after stopping the treatments.

Botox treatments are not administered more frequently than every three months. This helps prevent so-called Botox resistance, which is when the body becomes resistant to botulinum toxin.

Botox brow lift

Can Botox lift the eyebrows?

Botox can be used to gently lift the eyebrows and open up the eyes. However, a surgical brow lift and a Botox brow lift are not the same thing. Botox cannot remove excess tissue.

How does that work?

When lifting the eyebrows, a small amount of Botox is injected into the orbicularis oculi muscle surrounding the eye and/or between the eyebrows. As the downward-pulling muscles relax and the upward-lifting muscles remain active, the treated area lifts slightly.

What does it mean when your eyebrows droop?

If too much botulinum toxin is injected or if it is injected in the wrong places, it is certainly possible for the eyebrows to droop. However, when performed correctly, the treatment does not cause the eyebrows to droop. During the first few weeks, your forehead may feel and even look a little heavy. This does not mean that your eyebrows have drooped.

Medical Botulinum Toxin Treatment at a Glance

Many people associate botulinum toxin treatments primarily with aesthetics. However, botulinum toxin is first and foremost a prescription medication, and it is also used to treat various health conditions. Medical indications for Botox include, for example, bruxism, migraines, and excessive sweating. Medical botulinum toxin treatments are almost always preceded by a free consultation.

Botox, migraines, bruxism, Botox in Espoo

Bruxism is primarily treated with a mouthguard. If a mouthguard is not sufficient, the problem can be addressed with Botox. As a side effect of botulinum toxin treatment for the jaw muscles, the lower face may become slightly narrower.

Botox also helps with chronic migraines. Botulinum toxin reduces the release of neurotransmitters at nerve endings, which can help block the transmission of pain signals.

Excessive sweating is another common but often overlooked condition. Botox treatments can help when sweating in the armpits, palms, or face causes problems in daily life.

New medical applications for botulinum toxin are constantly being discovered. Ville Männistö has used botulinum toxin to treat conditions such as white finger, among others.

Botox Treatment for Bruxism in Espoo

Bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, affects not only your teeth but also your overall well-being. Associated symptoms of teeth grinding include a wide range of pains, aches, and even fatigue. If left untreated, in the worst-case scenario, a person who grinds their teeth may even break their teeth.

Bruxism is primarily treated with a mouthguard, which protects the teeth from the damaging effects of grinding. However, a mouthguard does not always address the underlying problem, which is overactivity of the jaw muscles. Botox can provide significant relief when a mouthguard alone is not enough.

Bruxism often causes damage to the teeth. That is why it is a good idea to seek help from a dentist. Oral health professionals have unmatched expertise when it comes to comprehensive treatment for teeth grinding.

Ville Männistö of VM-estetiikka performs occlusal-physiological botulinum toxin treatments on a daily basis. He also conducts scientific research on occlusal-physiological botulinum toxin treatments. You can find his research in the PubMed database.

Botox treatment for migraines

Botulinum toxin produces very good results in the preventive treatment of chronic migraine. Chronic migraine is defined as experiencing headaches on at least 15 days per month. Botulinum toxin treatment for migraine targets the muscles and nerve endings involved in the onset of migraine attacks.

In botulinum toxin treatment for migraines, Botox is injected into the muscles of the head, neck, and sometimes shoulders.

Botox not only relaxes the muscles but also blocks the transmission of pain signals. The number of migraine days decreases, as do the symptoms of migraine.

Botox does not cure migraines. However, it can reduce the release of pain-transmitting substances and soothe the nervous system, which has become hypersensitive to pain.

When treating migraines, Botox treatments are typically repeated every three months. The response to treatment varies from person to person, and not everyone finds that Botox helps with their migraines. It’s best to approach the first Botox treatment as a trial.

If you suffer from migraines, your botulinum toxin treatment is likely to be covered by Kela. We recommend that you start by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Laura Juopperi.

Treatment of excessive sweating with botulinum toxin

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is likely caused by regulatory disorders of the autonomic nervous system. Botox can provide significant relief from this problem. Botox is generally highly effective for underarm sweating. Sweating on the palms, feet, back, and scalp can also be controlled with botulinum toxin. Traditional micro-Botox is effective for facial sweating.

Excessive sweating can be a symptom of an illness

Anyone considering botulinum toxin treatment for excessive sweating should begin the process with a visit to a doctor. Before treating sweating with botulinum toxin, it is important to ensure that there are no underlying medical conditions causing the problem. If the sweating is caused by a systemic illness, the underlying condition must be treated first, and only then should the sweating symptoms be addressed.

Botox blocks the activity of sweat glands

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is highly effective for treating excessive underarm sweating. The medication paralyzes the sweat glands and blocks the nerves that trigger sweating. After treatment, underarm sweating stops almost completely for 3–6 months.

Kela reimbursement for Botox

When treating excessive sweating, Botox is a medication covered by Kela. Kela coverage requires a diagnosis of excessive sweating by a doctor. For this reason, the treatment process begins with a doctor’s appointment.

The treatment hurts a little

When treating excessive sweating, Botox is injected under the skin, not into the muscle. The injections still feel uncomfortable. For this reason, the treatment area is numbed before the injections are administered. Botox treatment on the palms and soles of the feet is more painful than botulinum toxin treatment in other areas.

Allow 30–60 minutes for the topical anesthetic to take effect; the injection itself takes about 15 minutes.

Excessive facial sweating can be treated with microbotox

Excessive facial sweating can cause significant inconvenience in daily life. Once underlying medical conditions causing the sweating have been ruled out and various home remedies have failed to provide relief, it may be worth trying microbotox treatment. Microbotox is administered directly into the skin, not the muscle. In addition to reducing sweating, it reduces oiliness and may shrink enlarged pores. At the same time, the skin’s surface becomes smoother, and fine lines and other imperfections are smoothed out.

What does Botox do?

Relaxes the muscle

Botox, or botulinum toxin, blocks the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine from the nerve ending. When the release of acetylcholine is blocked, the muscle treated with Botox does not receive the signal to contract. As a result, it remains relaxed for 3–6 months.

Reduces wrinkles

The skin over the relaxed muscle also relaxes. As a result, the expression lines in the treated area disappear for a few months.

Gently enhances facial features

If botulinum toxin treatment is used to relax the downward-pulling muscles (e.g., the platysma or DAO muscles), the facial features in the treated area will lift slightly.

Who is eligible for Botox treatments?

Botox treatments may be administered by doctors and dentists who have been trained in the administration of botulinum toxin treatments.

Nurses who are certified to administer botulinum toxin treatments may also perform Botox treatments when they do so in a healthcare facility under the direct supervision of a physician.

Read LVV's policy statement

Is Botox a neurotoxin?

Yes. Botox is the world's most potent neurotoxin. However, when administered in the correct dosage, it is an effective and safe medication.

In medical treatments, botulinum toxin is injected into muscles in extremely small doses, and in cosmetic Botox treatments, the substance is used in even smaller amounts.

“What is not poison? All substances are poisonous, and nothing is free of poison. It is only the dose that determines whether a substance is poisonous,” stated Paracelsus, known as the father of toxicology, hundreds of years ago.

What are the side effects of Botox treatment?

Most common risks and side effects:

  • redness at the injection site
  • bruises
  • a brief stinging sensation at the injection site
  • an undesirable outcome if botulinum toxin is injected in the wrong place

How long does Botox last?

For most people, the effects of Botox last 3 to 6 months.

Botox or Dysport?

The term "Botox treatment" is used as a synonym for all botulinum toxin treatments. We often refer to a treatment as "Botox" even when it is performed using a product such as Dysport, Xeomin, or Vistabel.

Is Botox covered by Kela?

If your doctor has prescribed medical Botox treatment for you, you can receive your botulinum toxin medication with Kela reimbursement (-40%) provided that the initial copayment of 70 euros has been exceeded.

Cosmetic Botox treatments are not covered by Kela.

How do I get a prescription for Botox?

If you suffer from migraines, excessive sweating, or any other health condition that can be treated with Botox, here’s what you can do:

  1. Book an appointment with Dr. Laura Juopperi
  2. If the diagnostic criteria are met, Laura will write you a prescription for Botox
  3. After that, you can purchase your botulinum toxin medication at a pharmacy with Kela coverage
